The Ten Crutches Podcast

What prevents us from being present in our lives? What ideas, concepts, tools can we use as ”crutches” to help us walk more deeply in each moment?

This is my attempt to help people with being human. I try to avoid the issues people fight about, the surface conflicts, like who has the right opinion about this or that. Instead, I ask: what are the conditions that make it difficult for all of us to be human? How can we address them?

What are the ten crutches?

  • There is no such thing as “the past.”
  • There is no such thing as “the future.”
  • All “things” (and “events”) are the same.
  • All “things” (and “events”) are different.
  • You will never find “it” outside of you.
  • You will never find “it” inside of you.
  • You are one with everything evil.
  • You are one with everything good.
  • You will never really know.
  • Your senses are the gates to the present moment.

While focused on "becoming more present," I found myself getting confused about what's in front of me. Obviously, I need my senses to experience what's in front of me. But what if my eyes/ears are seeing/hearing what is happening 1000s of miles away?
Our technology allows events on the other side of the world to "be in front of us" in real time. How to think about this?

These two words are easily confused. Some people may even consider "eternity" and "forever" to be the same. (Horrors!)
Herein, I express my opinion of how different they are.

A two-part series about ritual.
Part 1 is about “why?” Why have rituals at all? What reasons might we have to hold a ceremony? Our culture has forgotten many things about how important ritual is.
Part 2 is about how you can create ritual. What are the foundational principles behind creating ritual?

One more way of trying to say we are almost impossibly stuck inside our own personal views. How can we get loosen the grip of our interpretations of the world and exist more deeply in the actual reality?

I imagined a reality TV show where 100,000 people decide together: what should we all do with $10 million?

Definitions:
Physical fears: ultimately of annihilation, based on perceived existential threats to actual physical survival.
Mental fears: ultimately of annihilation, based on perceived threats to the mind's centrality in its self-created realm.
A slow-motion view of mental fear shows it's never about what the mind believes it to be about. But it can feel the exact same as a physical fear. Let's take a look.

As a retired hospice nurse, I saw many patients struggle with the process of dying. Many had indeed accepted that they would die. But the slow decline, the gradual loss of abilities, the clear truth that they were not in control: these could be quite difficult to accept.
The Tree Of Acceptance Of Dying is my contribution to help people cultivate acceptance of death and the process of dying.
This is the podcast version of an essay I wrote in 2023.
